Rhythm Switch Lesson Plan

  • Honesty

  • Group Dynamics

  • Adaptability

  • Interpersonal Communication

Students will work on interpersonal communication and group dynamics by being aware of the leader and the changing rhythm. They will discover ways to change the movement to fit the group and honesty by not giving away who the leader is.

S.T.A.R. Options:

Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…

Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.

Play + Connect Activity

Players should sit in a circle. One player leaves the room for a moment; this player will be the guesser. While the guesser is away, another player is selected to be the rhythm leader. This player should create a rhythm by clapping their hands or slapping the floor (or using chopsticks). The rest of the players should mimic this rhythm. The leader can change the rhythm as they wish and everyone must follow the new beat. When the guesser returns to the room, they must guess who is the leader. If correct, the leader becomes the guesser for the next round.

Breathing Exercise Options:

Belly Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Accordion Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Learn + Grow Activity

While the students are doing a movement, have them count by a certain number, such as 2s, 3s, 4s, etc. Have them count odd or even numbers. As a group list geometric shapes. Name character traits.

Reflect Activity

Is it hard if you do not get a chance to lead? What strategy did you use to not give away the leader? Is it OK to not discover the leader with your three guesses?

Variations

Challenge students to come up with new rhythms. Give guesser only one guess.
